STELLA TOONEN
Stella Toont was initiated by me, Stella Toonen. I am a young, playful designer, focusing largely on textile. In my studio in the east of Amsterdam, I nurture concepts, get lost in line structures, experiment, and search for surprising color combinations. In this, I try to reflect on current issues in the world in a way that is close to my heart. It’s important to me to make people more aware of the origin of the products we use and the distances they travel. Through my designs, I hope to be part of a conversation on how we treat those products and the world around us. However, I prefer to do this through joyful, poetic work. My love for craftsmanship is big and I strongly believe in the importance to cherish it as humankind, especially now. In my work, I combine traditional crafts with contemporary technology, to create new, original designs.
If I had to choose one source of inspiration, it would be nature: she is our most versatile designer. She manages to create surprising patterns, combines colors perfectly, composes like no other, and sets all our senses alight. It may come as no surprise that I like to zoom in on the beauty of various elements of nature, combine them, and document it. Appreciating the little things is, I think, very valuable in our rushed, modern-day society. Perhaps that’s where my love for craftsmanship comes from: the idea that human hands worked on an object, with lots of care and attention.
